What Does Working From Home Mean?

June 24, 2007

Working from home, sounds great doesn’t it? No more commuting, no bosses, no back-biting, no hassles; just living the life of Reilly, right? Wrong. Most people don’t realize you actually have to WORK! It usually means longer hours than from a traditional office and constant interruptions from your personal life. The reason why is simple: because you are home, you don’t stop working and you don’t think to separate your personal life out of your work at home life. Here are a few tips to help you be successful while working from home and still have a personal life:

1. Set up a real office area – preferably a room all to yourself. Have no distractions like the home phone, TV or kids (if possible). Try to make your home office appear like a traditional office with all the necessary home office furniture and equipment to be fully functional.
2. Kids – if your reason for working from home is to watch your children, then you need a plan in order to divide your time. You may have to work during the evening and night rather than the day time. Have a daily schedule listing the appointments and commitments for the week and decide where to fit in your work load.
3. Close your home office every day – have a set number of hours each day that you will devote to your work; then once the working hours are used, turn off the computer and close the door. You have to be able to walk away every day in order to remain sane. Whether you work during the day or at night, once your allotted business hours are done you need to stop working and enjoy your personal time. Do not allow your work to spill into your personal time, you will need the space every day to unwind and forget about work.
4. Add an outdoor activity to your life – they may sound extreme but if you are now working from home, when do you actually go outside and look around? Take up gardening, go for a drive, go window shopping, take up golf or tennis. What ever it may be just do it and get out of the house, people working from home tend to become shut-ins.

As far as what makes a good work from home business; that’s up to you. Some people utilize the Internet while others find companies with the flexibility to employee at home workers. Once you have your work from home job or business, never forget the 4 tips you just read and then start enjoying your freedom.
